It would really be awesome if js was using jQuery!..
Would make it so much easier to work with!

Hi,
joomla uses mootools as javascript frameworks. Mootools supports cross browser safe ajax.
Whether or not mootools is a good choice by the joomla developers is a different discussion but I think it is a bad idea to have two different frameworks on the same site. ( they are quite big so speed is one thing). I try to avoid any jquery plugins and will use mootools for the component/module.
so : wont' fix/rejected

I have heard talk about joomla core moving over to jQuery so you should look into that first
Secondly there is no problem with running mootools and jQuery side by side... If you take a look at the major theme creators (like yootheme, joomlart, rockettheme etc) they all tend to use jQuery.
And there can always be optional to load or not.. I would quess that like 90% of your visitor has jQuery loaded from the google CDN so it wont be requested that often to begin with
Just think that there will be so much more possibilities with the component if you use jQuery
edit: There are ways to disable mootools in frontend... only the backend is depended on this.
